Women Win and Advance
OKLAHOMA CITY – With 22 points for Yesi Castillo and Charite Lewis, the University of Science and Arts’ women held on for a 67-61 win over Mid-America Christian Wednesday night in the first round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament held at Oklahoma Christian.
Castillo, the SAC Newcomer of the Year, posted her 11th double-double of the season and her second straight game with 22 points. Lewis scored 20 points for the third time this season and finished one point shy of her career-high. Juliana Leite gave USAO an outside threat by hitting two 3-pointers and finishing with 11 points.
MACU’s Courtney Sorrels led all scorers with 25 points. Sorrels only hit three field goals, though, as she did most of her damage from the free throw line going 19-of-20.
USAO will play the No. 3 seed Southern Nazarene at 8 p.m. Friday. The Drovers enter the quarterfinal round with a record for 17-13 overall while the Crimson Storm enter 24-5.

Men Lock Down SGU
OKLAHOMA CITY – With great interior passing and defense that forced 15 turnovers and only 14 field goals, the USAO men cruised passed St. Gregory’s 73-47 in the first round of the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament at Oklahoma Christian Wednesday afternoon.
While the Drover defense held the Cavs to only 33 percent shooting in each half, the USAO offense was penetrating and dishing for easy buckets. At halftime Jorge Parra led the team with 11 points, most coming from assists. Allen Harris posted seven, Dexter Williams had four and DeAngelo Alexander added three assists as 20 of USAO’s 30 field goals come from assists.
Tim Nelson broke the game open with 16 second-half points on 4-of-8 shooting from 3-point land. Nelson finished with 20 points for the third straight game. He has hit 13 3-pointers in the last three games at a clip of 45 percent.
The Drovers (15-14) move on to face the No. 2 seed Southern Nazarene (23-7) at 6 p.m. Thursday. The winner of that game will move on to face the winner of the Rogers State/Oklahoma Baptist game at 2 p.m. Saturday.
