Women Rebound Against SNU

Returning home, the University of Science and Arts earned a much-needed win Saturday night over Southern Nazarene 60-54 for the teamıs first win in Sooner Athletic Conference play.

The win snaps a two-game winless streak and a losing streak of six games spanning three years over the Crimson Storm. The last time the Drovers defeated SNU was Feb. 14, 2002. The team improves to 8-3 on the season and 1-1 in the SAC.

Katie Sterling led all scorers with 19 points including a game-high three three-pointers, but her two free throws with 1:28 left in the game broke a three-minute scoring drought and ended up being the difference in the game.

Senior Stephanie Russell, coming off a 20-point performance in a loss at John Brown on Thursday, hit a three-pointer to put USAO up 54-42 with 3:51 to play. Both teams struggled over the next several minutes, but had SNU pulled to within seven points when Sterling knocked down her two shots.

SNU rattled off another five points bringing them to within four when Kinzie Glover hit a three-pointer with 33 seconds left.

Drover point guard Elaine Contreras hit four straight free throws over the final 20 seconds to hold off any hope of a last-second upset.

USAO had seven players score including junior center Nikki Yager, who scored 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. The Oolagah native also had three assists and one blocked shot. Senior center Nicole Sherman added four points in 16 minutes of action, and her eight rebounds and two blocked shots helped USAO
dominate the paint.

The team returns to action Monday with a home game against Northwestern Oklahoma. The tip is scheduled for 6 p.m.
