DROVERS SNAP SKID AT
SNU
BETHANY – Head Coach Jay Niehues actually jumped
for joy after Stephanie Russell scored the go-ahead bucket with less
than one second remaining Saturday night as the University of Science
and Arts knocked off Southern Nazarene 56-55.
USAO jumped out to a first-half lead and held a
33-24 halftime advantage. SNU steadily chipped away at that lead in
the second half and completed its rally as Christian Jackson hit a
14-foot jumper with 10 seconds left to give the home team a 55-54
lead.
Without taking its final timeout, the Drovers
streaked to the other end of the court and Russell found herself under
the basket with the ball as time expired. She was fouled on the play;
the game ended with the rebound of her miss.
The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the
Drovers and improved their record to 10-8 overall and 3-6 in the
Sooner Athletic Conference. This marked the second win over SNU this
season.
Jamie Morgan led all scorers with 27 points
including four timely three-pointers to lead SNU’s second-half charge.
No other SNU player scored more than seven points.
Nikki Yager led USAO with 11 points and five
rebounds before fouling out. Russell, Lindsey Monroe and Katie
Sterling scored 10 points each. Russell added nine rebounds and one
steal. Sterling only scored one point in the second half, but she was
very active collecting six rebounds, dishing out two assists and
finishing with three steals.
