Women Win Second in a Row

Stephanie Russell was almost perfect, at least from three-point land, as the University of Science and Arts held off a pesky Wayland Baptist club 67-58 Thursday night at the USAO Fieldhouse.

Russell helped USAO improved to 11-8 overall and 4-6 in the Sooner Athletic Conference as she went 5-of-6 from behind the arc and finished with a game-high 21 points. Three of the first four USAO buckets were Russell three-pointers, and she helped nail the coffin shut with two three-pointers and two free throws in the final three minutes.

Teammate Katie Sterling scored USAO’s final five points of the first half and four of the team’s final six points of the game to finish with 19 points including 9-of-13 from the free-throw line. The conference’s second leading scorer shook her recent shooting woes by hitting four consecutive free throws to seal the team’s second straight win.

Russell and Sterling led the Drovers in rebounding as well collecting nine and eight rebounds, respectively. Lindsey Monroe scored a dozen points, and Nicole Sherman came off the bench to post eight points, seven rebounds, five blocks and two steals.

The Drovers continue a four-game home stand Saturday afternoon against Lubbock Christian. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the USAO Fieldhouse.
