Drovers Sweep St. Gregory’sCHICKASHA -- It has been over a week since either soccer team from the University of Science and Arts has posted a win. Tuesday the men and women’s teams added a notch in the win column with 1-0 home wins over St. Gregory’s. The USAO women (3-3-1) rebounded from two straight defeats last week while the men (4-1-0) played their first match since a suspended game at Oklahoma Christian Sept. 13. The team led 3-2 with 22 minutes remaining, but now, the game may not be made up. In Tuesday’s first game, Talita Guindani scored her second goal of the season on an assist from Tara Wallace in the 42nd minute. That was Guindani’s only shot, but she proved to be a pest for SGU defenders most of the day. Senior goalkeeper Katy Swartzendruber collected her third shutout of the season. The men’s game looked more like rugby at times than soccer. USAO’s Raphael Silvo scored on a redirect from Tom Hubbard in the 23rd minute for the winning goal, but the game was marred by six yellow cards (four on SGU) and a red card on SGU. The game was even stopped in the second half for an injury that saw USAO’s Jimmy Bernard carted off the field and taken to the emergency room. USAO dominated with 19 total shots and nine shots on goal. The Drover defense only allowed six total shots as freshman Shane Flanagan earned his first career shutout. Both teams host Bethany College, Kan., Friday beginning with the women’s game at 2 p.m. at Drover Field. -###- |
