The method used in this book is developed from a number of theologians. They are most notably, David Tracy, A Blessed Rage for Order: The New Pluralism in Theology (New York: Seabury, 1975) and The Analogical Imagination (New York: Crossroad, 1981); John Navone and Thomas Cooper, Tellers of the Word (New York: LeJacq, 1981); Gregory Baum, Man Becoming: God in Secular Experience (New York: Seabury, 1970); Charles Meyer, Man of God (Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1974); and John Shea, "An Approach to Pastoral Theology," Chicago Studies (St. Mary of the Lake Seminary, 1973), Stories of God (Chicago: Thomas More, 1978), Stories of Faith (Chicago: Thomas More, 1980), and An Experience Named Spirit (Chicago: Thomas More, 1983). The Thomas More "What a Modern Catholic Believes . . ." series has a number of books which present excellent background for some of the chapters of this volume. They are as follows: What a Modern Catholic Believes About. . . .
Mysticism by Robert Nowell Confession by Tad Guzie The Priesthood by John Ring and Dennis Geaney Prayer by James Bowman Salvation by Tad Guzie Eucharist by John Krump As Seen by a Non-Catbolic by Martin Marty The Holy Spirit by Charles Meyer Worship by C.J. McNaspy The Right to Life by Richard Westley Updating Theology, I by George Malone Updating Theology,II by George Malone Women by Sister Albertus Magnus McGrath The Church by Andrew Greeley Death by Robert Nowell Conscience, Freedom and Authority by John Deedy Heaven and Hell by John Shea Suffering and Evil by Timothy O'Connell God by Andrew Greeley Sin by John Shea Moral Problems by Raymond T Bosler Sex by Eugene Kennedy Marriage by Eugene Kennedy For the church, Avery Dulles's Models of the Church (Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1974) and Paul C. Empie and T. Austin Murphy's Papal Primacy and the Universal Church (Minneapolis, Minnesota: Augsburg, 1974) are very helpful. The articles in the one-volume edition of The Encyclopedia of Theology: The Concise Sacramentum Mundi (New York: Crossroad) edited by Karl Rahner come close to providing a systematic theology in miniature of that very distinguished theologian. I have wrestled with many of these issues in other of my own books:
What a Modern Catholic Believes About the Church (Chicago: Thomas More, 1972) The Jesus Myth (Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1973) The Sinai Myth (Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1975) The Mary Myth (New York: Seabury, 1977) The Friendsbip Game (Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1970) Death and Beyond (Chicago: Thomas More, 1976) Sexual Intimacy (Chicago: Thomas More, 1973) Love and Play (New York: Seabury, 1977) The New Agenda (Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1973) Religion: A Secular Theology (New York: Free Press, 1982) The Religious Imagination (New York: Sadlier, 1981) The Bottom Line Catechism (Chicago: Thomas More, 1982) |
