MEMORANDUM FROM INDONESIAN STUDENTS ABROAD1. We strongly condemn the horrendous tragedy implemented by ABRI officials and the mysterious security guards, who do not have any rights whatsoever, toward the Peaceful Movement of University Students and Pro Total Reformation Activists, especially during the Special MPR 1998 Session. It is also imperative to note that we are not turning a blind eye to all the atrocities that have occured in previous history.
2. We remind the Transitional Government under President Habibie, together with the ABRI Commander, to immediately stop all the brutal suppressions.
3. We, as the Indonesian students who are studying abroad, from all over the world, will keep a close watch on the abuse of power with this act of brutal suppression in any way and onto whichever party. If this goes on, we resolve to combat it with whatever means we have from
abroad in the shortest time possible.4. Let this serve as a reminder that whatever you do, especially in terms of brutal acts, will be noted in history. Additionally, those bearing the names of the perpetrators and responsible parties will be punished very soon in the process of ongoing history, and in accordance with the atrocities that they have done.
Notes:a. Resignation is the only choice for those whose hands have been bloodied in their efforts to squash the peaceful reformation movements in Indonesia.
b. To the leaders of other countries who have aided in arming Indonesia, we urge you to contemplate the effects of using those weapons to murder university students and
other activists who participated in the peaceful movement.Specifically: Stop all of your military aid at once!
Signed,
The 582 Indonesian students from various countries abroad (including the whole US, Europe and Australia) who have sent their approval on the terms stipulated in this memorandum from their respective e-mail addresses to/ through the MAILBOX of Effendi Gazali (eg53) at Cornell University.
