Music majors at USAO may choose between the music education emphasis or music performance. Students with majors outside of music may also obtain a specialization in music. At present there are about 35 music majors at USAO and an additional 4 or 5 music minors. The music area offers a broad array of coursework and lessons on instruments. In addition to courses in music theory, music appreciation, music education, conducting, and voice and piano pedagogy, students may take private lessons in voice, piano, brass, woodwinds, and percussion. Students are also expected to be active in music ensembles such as band, choir, chamber choir, or opera scenes. Each semester the music area offers 15-18 music events. Among these are student recitals, junior or senior recitals, choir and band concerts, faculty recitals, and guest artists. Music majors at USAO enjoy fine facilities for practice and performance. Practice rooms in Davis Hall house Baldwin and Kawai pianos. The two performing facilities for the music area contain Steinway and Kawai grands. In 1995 a state-of-the-art 12-station class piano lab was installed. Music students also have access to a music technology and computer lab with two Macintosh work stations, sequencing, note-setting, and music theory software, a sound system, and sound modules.
